Senior Staff Backend Engineer, Search

Job Description

Monzo is seeking a Senior Staff Backend Engineer to enhance its search capabilities. The successful candidate will play a crucial role in rethinking the search experience for Monzo's 10 million customers, enabling them to efficiently find transactions, products, help articles, and more.

This role involves collaborating with the ML Platform and various product teams to influence the long-term product strategy for search at Monzo. The engineer will initially focus on launching a global search experience, scaling search to support all account types, and optimizing results with machine learning models.

Responsibilities:

• Partner with engineering leadership and provide technical leadership on the search domain.
• Collaborate with product, data, research, and design leaders to identify and execute on opportunities.
• Contribute to high-level planning and strategy while also diving deep into problem execution.
• Lead architectural discussions for complex systems.
• Mentor and up-level engineers.

Requirements:

• Track record of technical excellence in delivering resilient systems.
• Experience working with Machine Learning specialists on search ranking problems.
• Ability to solve problems end-to-end, from client applications to backend infrastructure.
• Experience leading technically across multiple teams to deliver customer-facing features.
• Quantitative mindset with a focus on data-informed decisions.
• Comfort working in a cross-functional team and resolving ambiguity.
• Experience working with stakeholders, including non-technical senior-level stakeholders.
