Monzo is seeking a Senior Staff Backend Engineer to enhance their search capabilities. The candidate will play a crucial role in rethinking the search experience, enabling millions of customers to efficiently find transactions, products, help articles, and more. The candidate will be working in the Core Banking product collective, collaborating with ML Platform and product teams, and influencing the long-term product strategy for search at Monzo.

Responsibilities:

  • Launch a global search experience from customer experience to backend systems.
  • Scale search to support various account types and internationalization.
  • Optimize results with machine learning models and build feedback loops.
  • Provide technical leadership in the search domain.
  • Collaborate with product, data, research, and design teams.
  • Lead architectural discussions for complex systems.
  • Mentor and up-level engineers.

Requirements:

  • Track record of delivering resilient systems, ideally behind consumer products.
  • Experience working with Machine Learning specialists on search ranking problems.
  • Experience solving problems end-to-end, from client applications to backend infrastructure.
  • Experience technically across 3-4 teams to deliver customer-facing features that leverage ML.
  • Quantitative mindset and comfortable making data-informed decisions.
  • Experience working in a cross-functional team and resolving ambiguity.
  • Experience working with stakeholders, especially non-technical stakeholders at the senior level.
