Job Description
Grammarly is seeking a Privacy Counsel to join its Legal team. This role is based in Berlin and offers a dynamic hybrid working model. The Privacy Counsel will play a vital role in advancing Grammarly's vision for a world-class privacy function, tackling novel legal and technical issues related to privacy and data protection. The ideal candidate will ensure Grammarly maintains the trust of millions of daily users by supporting the evolution and maturation of the global privacy program.

Role involves:
  • Supporting Grammarly’s ability to deliver on its company objectives through a best-in-class privacy program.
  • Collaborating with leadership to integrate privacy by design and as a value-add in business roadmaps, systems, and initiatives.
  • Communicating privacy requirements and offer guidance to other teams.
  • Simplifying and distilling complex global privacy requirements into practical next steps.
  • Serving as a key escalation point for Legal in response to privacy incidents.
  • Driving updates to Grammarly’s internal and external privacy documentation.
  • Assisting with customer and vendor contract escalations, business partnerships, and corporate matters through a privacy lens.
  • Supporting scaling of the function by supporting implementation of process improvement, automation, legal technology, and new working methods.
  • Engaging with regulatory, governmental, industry, and peer groups on privacy legal issues as needed.

Requirements:
  • Deep understanding of privacy laws, regulations, and frameworks (e.g. GDPR, CCPA/CPRA, ISO 27001) and insight into the generative AI industry, applicable laws, and emerging trends.
  • Experience with industry-specific privacy regulations is preferred (e.g., COPPA, FERPA, HIPAA).
  • Passionate about Grammarly’s products and the intersection of technology, law, and business and leverages this curiosity to think tactically and strategically.
  • Experience with both B2C and  B2B SaaS privacy programs and the ability to think big.
  • Strong interpersonal communication and problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to translate complex issues or problems into direct, actionable guidance.
  • Demonstrated ability to support and collaborate with cross-functional stakeholders.
  • A history of developing a culture of getting to “yes, if…”
  • A team player who leads with humility and a healthy sense of humor.
  • JD degree from an accredited law school (or foreign equivalent) with membership in good standing in a US state bar.
  • 5-8+ years practicing law.
