Staff Software Engineer, Backend (Virtual Cards Platform)

Job Description

Affirm is seeking a Staff Software Engineer to join their Virtual Cards (VCN) Platform Engineering team. This team is responsible for powering all of Affirm's products that rely on one-time-use cards, enabling consumers to use Affirm’s financial products at virtually any merchant accepting card payments. The VCN Platform team is crucial for scaling Affirm's network by bridging Affirm and external credit networks like Visa.This role involves setting the technical strategy for the team, collaborating with product management, design, and analytics, and acting as a force-multiplier by defining and advocating for technical solutions and operational processes. The engineer will also take ownership of the team’s operations and availability, foster a culture of quality and ownership, and help develop talent on the team.What this role involves:

Requirements:

• 7+ years of experience designing, developing, and launching backend systems at scale using languages like Python or Kotlin.
• Experience developing highly available distributed systems using technologies like AWS, MySQL, Spark, and Kubernetes.
• Experience delivering major features, system components, or deprecating existing functionality.
• Ability to write high-quality code.
• Comfortable with ambiguity and understanding large systems.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.
• Experience in the card network landscape.
• Bachelor’s degree in a related field or equivalent practical experience.
