Senior Software Engineer, Backend (Merchant Risk Intelligence & Platform)

Job Description

Affirm is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to join their Merchant Risk Intelligence & Platform (MRIP) team. This role is focused on building functionalities that automate merchant risk assessment throughout their lifecycle within Affirm. The MRIP team creates the backend platform necessary for ML engineers to build models that automate decision-making, ensuring risk is properly managed and the merchant experience is smooth.Responsibilities:

• Owning and delivering quarterly goals for the team.
• Leading engineers to solve open-ended problems.
• Collaborating with product management, design, and analytics.
• Identifying and solving project, process, technology, or business issues.
• Supporting the operations and availability of team artifacts.
• Fostering a culture of quality and ownership.
• Developing talent on the team through feedback and guidance.

Requirements:

• 4+ years of experience designing, developing, and launching backend systems at scale using languages like Python or Kotlin.
• Track record of developing highly available distributed systems using technologies like AWS, MySQL, and Kubernetes.
• Experience with monitoring and alerting systems (sentry.io, rollbar, chronosphere, kibana).
• Strong understanding of distributed systems and architectural decisions.
• Experience defining a technical plan for feature delivery.
• Proficiency in making significant code changes in a large codebase.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.
• Bachelor’s degree in a related field or equivalent practical experience.
