Job Description
Anthropic is seeking a Research Counsel to advise on data acquisition and risk mitigation, focusing on copyright, privacy, and related issues for AI model development. The role involves supporting the Frontier Red-Teaming, Policy, and Societal Impacts teams to ensure safe and responsible AI development. The ideal candidate will navigate complex legal challenges in machine learning and data acquisition.
Responsibilities:
- Advising research teams on permissible data usage and data sourcing strategy.
- Monitoring regulatory developments related to AI training data.
- Translating data needs between research teams and Legal & Policy stakeholders.
- Engaging with stakeholders to develop data governance norms for AI development.
- Supporting Anthropic’s Frontier Red-Teaming team on AI safety and model vulnerabilities.
- Counseling the Societal Impacts team on data usage, sharing, and publications.
Requirements:
- JD and active membership in at least one U.S. state bar (California preferred).
- 5-10 years of legal experience advising on copyright, privacy, data, and related issues for technology companies or AI/ML products (in-house experience preferred).
- Creative problem solver with a passion for translating legal requirements to technical concepts.
- Experience advising on legal issues for AI products or services and academic research.
- Excellent written communication skills.
- Ability to balance organizational mission and goals.
- Willingness to work outside areas of expertise in a fast-growing startup.
