Job Description
The New York Times is seeking a News Editor, Books to guide news coverage across the desk, assigning and editing breaking news and enterprise stories on the publishing industry and the literary world. This is a hybrid position based in New York City.
Responsibilities:
- Manage a team of reporters
- Make daily decisions on news coverage and enterprise
- Brainstorm and assign several stories per week
- First and second edit news stories; second edit features and profiles
- Monitor trending book-related news on a daily basis
- Represent the Book Review at various news meetings
- Collaborate with editors on other teams
- Adhere to The Times’s editorial standards
- Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world
Requirements:
- 10+ years as a digital reporter/editor
- Experience managing news reporters
- Demonstrated experience appropriately framing stories and line editing on digital deadline
- Experience with visually driven work
- A deep enthusiasm for books
- Some knowledge of the American publishing industry
- A “service mindset” — i.e., a desire to help readers understand the world through books and book news
- An understanding of best audience practices — headlines, publishing cadence, etc.
- A desire to assign and edit in different story forms
- A collaborative nature
