The New York Times is seeking a Deputy Weekend Editor to play a crucial role in shaping the National desk's 24/7 report. This hybrid position, based in New York, requires regular office attendance and reports to the Weekend Editor. The Deputy Weekend Editor will coordinate coverage of breaking news and planned events, ensuring a stream of enterprise and feature stories from across the country to drive the weekend.

Responsibilities:

  • Assign stories to general assignment reporters and correspondents.
  • Coordinate with other editors on management and training of fellows.
  • Stay current on new story formats and digital innovations.
  • Coordinate story publication and promotion plans.
  • Maintain weekend digital and print budgets.
  • Establish weekend print priorities and communicate with print hub.
  • Ensure smooth handoff of live slugs and developing stories.
  • Identify weekend coverage priorities and monitor sources for breaking news.
  • Monitor wires, local and regional outlets, and social media for developing trends.
  • Take on editing duties on a Live blog as necessary.
  • Look for opportunities to generate stories that engage weekend readers.
  • Work with the News Director to plan advance and ongoing coverage of major events.

Requirements:

  • 5+ years’ experience at a journalism or media company.
  • Experience stepping in at all stages of the editing process.
  • Writing skills that demonstrate mastery of journalistic style and standards.
  • Experience working in high-pressure, deadline-driven newsrooms.
  • A strong understanding of Times style and standards (preferred).
  • A willingness to be flexible as the newsroom’s needs evolve (preferred).
