Job Description
The New York Times is seeking a Video Journalist to join its growing video team in New York. This role focuses on breaking news, live journalism, and news video reporting on the weekend. The Video Journalist will be responsible for staying on top of the news, sourcing video clips, editing footage, and scripting text-on-screen packages.
The role involves setting up and monitoring live video feeds, collaborating with newsroom desks to identify, verify, edit, and publish video material in various formats. The ideal candidate will pitch relevant, visual, and compelling stories, demonstrating strong editorial skills and the ability to work under deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
Responsibilities:
- Source, script, and edit live, breaking news video packages.
- Use news wire services to acquire material.
- Set up and monitor live feeds, adding text and graphics.
- Find, verify, and acquire user-generated content.
- Write succinct and effective copy for video assets.
- Monitor the news day across core areas of coverage.
- Coordinate with the social team on the creation of news clips.
- Experiment with different forms of vertical and mobile visual storytelling.
- Collaborate with visual editors on social formats.
- Demonstrate support for journalistic independence.
Requirements:
- 4+ years of journalism experience in a digital video or broadcast newsroom.
- Proficient in Adobe Premiere Pro.
- Demonstrated writing and researching skills.
- Social media platform expertise.
- Experience with UGC verification (preferred).
- Thorough knowledge of global current events (preferred).
- Knowledge of legal, ethical, copyright, and usage issues for visuals (preferred).
- Well-versed in social and digital media (preferred).
- Willingness to work evenings and weekends (preferred).
- Communicative and collaborative team player (preferred).
