Job Description

Gusto is seeking a Head of Engineering for their Embedded Payroll (GEP) division. This role involves leading the end-to-end development of innovative embedded API products. The Head of Engineering will lead a team of engineers and collaborate with Product Management, Design, Data, and Technical Solutions teams to create scalable solutions.This individual will play a key leadership role within Gusto, contributing to the growth of the GEP business. They will be empowered by the GM of Gusto Embedded Payroll and will operate with a startup mentality within the larger organization.Responsibilities:

• Lead and mentor a large team of engineers.
• Lead technical strategy and execution for Gusto’s embedded payroll product.
• Tackle complex technical challenges from a developer's perspective.
• Foster a culture of excellence by implementing engineering rituals.
• Build strong relationships with internal teams and external partners.
• Create and advise teams on API-first architectural specifications.

Requirements:

• Over 10–15 years of engineering experience, including 5+ years in senior leadership roles.
• Experience in high-growth startup settings.
• Proven track record developing enterprise SaaS products.
• Demonstrated success in building and scaling developer-focused products and APIs.
• Proven leadership of engineering teams with 20+ members.
• Deep architectural expertise paired with strong business acumen.
• Customer-first mindset.
• Clear, effective communicator with strong written and verbal skills.
