Job Description
Gusto is seeking a Head of Engineering for their Embedded Payroll (GEP) division. This role involves leading the end-to-end development of innovative embedded API products. The Head of Engineering will lead a team of engineers and collaborate with Product Management, Design, Data, and Technical Solutions teams to create scalable solutions.This individual will play a key leadership role within Gusto, contributing to the growth of the GEP business. They will be empowered by the GM of Gusto Embedded Payroll and will operate with a startup mentality within the larger organization.
Responsibilities: - Lead and mentor a large team of engineers.
- Lead technical strategy and execution for Gusto’s embedded payroll product.
- Tackle complex technical challenges from a developer's perspective.
- Foster a culture of excellence by implementing engineering rituals.
- Build strong relationships with internal teams and external partners.
- Create and advise teams on API-first architectural specifications.
Requirements: - Over 10–15 years of engineering experience, including 5+ years in senior leadership roles.
- Experience in high-growth startup settings.
- Proven track record developing enterprise SaaS products.
- Demonstrated success in building and scaling developer-focused products and APIs.
- Proven leadership of engineering teams with 20+ members.
- Deep architectural expertise paired with strong business acumen.
- Customer-first mindset.
- Clear, effective communicator with strong written and verbal skills.
