Job Description

Gusto is seeking a Principal AI Software Engineer to integrate conversational and agentic AI into its products for small and medium businesses. The ideal candidate will have experience applying AI technologies to enhance existing product experiences.This role involves:

• Understanding the customer journey and identifying opportunities to simplify and automate through AI.
• Designing and building multi-agent AI systems to automate customer workflows.
• Partnering with cross-functional teams to bring AI-powered experiences to life.
• Iterating on AI-driven features to improve customer outcomes.
• Supporting Payroll and Tax teams in applying AI to build intuitive experiences for internal and external users.

The requirements for this role include:

• 15+ years of software development experience.
• Expertise in Agentic AI, Machine Learning, and LLMs.
• Proficiency in designing and implementing standardized software architecture principles.
• Product-minded with creative problem-solving skills.
• Ability to communicate technical complexity.

Gusto offers:

• Cash compensation targeted at $222,000/yr to $247,000/yr in Denver, and $261,000/yr to $290,000/yr for San Francisco & New York.
• Stock equity.

Travel to Gusto’s Denver office for onboarding is required. Employees based in Denver, San Francisco, and New York City will be expected to work from the office on designated days.
