Sotheby's, a premier destination for art and luxury established in 1744, is seeking an Associate Cataloguer to support the Books and Manuscripts Department in New York. The Associate Cataloguer will play a crucial role in coordinating and cataloguing both live and online sales, contributing to print and digital catalogues, and assisting with large-scale appraisals. This role also involves providing general support to specialists and consultants within the department.Responsibilities:
Assist with the evaluation of works for auction and appraisal purposes.
Work with specialists on valuations and follow-up on property consignments.
Assist in securing consignments, including client correspondence and auction estimates.
Maintain consignment lists and client records.
Conduct research to establish provenance and publication history.
Write and proofread catalogue notes and essays.
Assist with catalogue production, including data entry and layout.
Coordinate sale-related responsibilities, including condition reports and exhibition setup.
Promote auctions and respond to bidder inquiries.
Manage sellers and their property through pre- and post-sale processes.
Partner with other business areas to resolve client issues.
Requirements:
At least two years of experience in an auction house or dealer setting.
Knowledge of a classical language preferred.
Excellent communication and client service skills.
Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office.
Enthusiasm and willingness to broaden knowledge.
Flexibility to work overtime and weekend hours when necessary.
Proven administrative or relevant experience is desirable.
Sotheby's offers:
A proposed base salary ranging from $50,000 to $60,000.
