Job Description

Discord is seeking a Senior Counsel, Intellectual Property to join their legal team. This role is crucial for managing and executing the company's IP portfolio strategy, including trademarks, copyrights, and patents. The Senior Counsel will work closely with Engineering, Product, Sales, Marketing, Litigation, and Corp Dev teams to provide IP solutions and support the company's global expansion.Responsibilities include:

• Refining IP priorities and mitigation strategies
• Advising Product, Engineering, Sales, and Marketing teams
• Advancing Discord’s patent program
• Collaborating on patent licensing
• Optimizing global trademark enforcement
• Providing IP guidance across Legal workstreams
• Managing the open-source program
• Creating IP education and compliance materials
• Streamlining resources through counsel management and AI use

Requirements include:

• JD from an accredited law school
• Admission to the California Bar
• 8+ years of experience in a law firm and in-house legal department
• Strategic mindset with risk management skills
• Expertise in patent strategy, prosecution, and licensing
• Experience managing trademark prosecution and brand enforcement
• Experience advising on software licensing, open-source compliance, and copyright issues
• Ability to develop and mentor legal professionals
