Job Description
Garner Health is seeking a Manager, Data Engineering to lead the team responsible for generating national healthcare provider rankings. This role is based in New York City and requires working in the office three days a week. The Engineering Manager will provide technical oversight, drive new features, mentor engineers, and ensure the delivery of complex technical solutions. The role reports to the VP of Health Intelligence Engineering.

What this role involves:
  • Providing technical oversight and driving new features aligned with Garner’s strategic mission.
  • Owning and operating Garner’s core systems for generating provider rankings.
  • Building a high-performance team through mentoring, feedback, and hiring.
  • Continuously striving for quality while maintaining speed of delivery.
  • Collaborating across disciplines to identify bottlenecks and risks, proposing mitigation strategies, and communicating tradeoffs.
  • Protecting user privacy and security through best practices.

Requirements:
  • 7+ years of hands-on engineering experience, with a focus on big data and distributed systems.
  • 3+ years of experience as an engineering leader, translating ambiguous business requirements into scalable solutions and new product features.
  • Expertise with batch data processing frameworks such as Hadoop, Spark, EMR, etc.
  • Expertise with big data technologies such as Argo, Apache Iceberg, AWS Glue, Spark, Metaflow, DBT, and Soda.
  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to inspire, motivate, mentor, and retain top engineering talent.
  • Proven ability to influence without authority.
  • Familiarity with cloud infrastructure (e.g., AWS, GCP).
  • Familiarity with healthcare data standards (e.g. HIPAA, EDI) is highly desirable.
  • Strong sense of ownership and proactive problem-solving mindset.
  • A willingness to “roll up your sleeves” and do whatever is necessary to ensure company success.
  • Experience working in a rapidly evolving startup environment.
