Job Description
The ACLU is seeking a Staff Attorney, Senior Staff Attorney, or Senior Counsel to join their Disability Rights Program. This role focuses on advancing veterans’ rights through disability rights. The position is term-limited for two years and requires in-office presence two days a week in either San Francisco, CA, or Washington, DC.
What this role involves: - Creating and implementing strategies using litigation, public education, and legislative and policy advocacy.
- Leading litigation, including writing pleadings and briefs, conducting discovery, and arguing appeals.
- Working with ACLU staff on bills in state legislatures and in Congress.
- Drafting policy analysis to effect change in state and federal administrative agencies.
- Engaging in community outreach and public speaking.
- Developing co-counsel relationships with other public interest lawyers and pro bono attorneys.
- Providing support to ACLU affiliates and cooperating attorneys.
Requirements: - J.D. degree and bar admission in one state (eventually in California or D.C.).
- Experience as a litigator.
- Commitment to public interest law, constitutional law, and/or civil rights.
- Ability to engage in complex legal analysis and fact investigation.
- Superior analytic and research skills.
- Excellent writing and speaking skills.
- Self-motivation and ability to meet deadlines.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
