Job Description
The ACLU's National Security Project is seeking a Staff Attorney, Senior Staff Attorney, or Senior Counsel to fight for people and communities harmed by the government in the name of national security. This is a hybrid role based in New York, NY, with in-office requirements of two days per week or eight days per month.
The role involves:
- Engaging in litigation, including legal research, fact development, and drafting pleadings.
- Identifying and developing new litigation and advocacy projects.
- Analyzing legislation for potential litigation.
- Serving as a resource for ACLU legislative and policy work.
- Collaborating with staff across the organization.
- Engaging in public speaking.
- Working with and advising ACLU state affiliates and partner organizations.
- Developing relationships with other advocates, lawyers, academics, and potential clients.
- Traveling as required for litigation, conferences, and case and strategy development.
The ideal candidate should bring:
- Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from a U.S. law school.
- A minimum of two years of litigation experience is preferred.
- Admission to the New York Bar is a requirement.
- Familiarity with constitutional litigation and statutory matters pertaining to national security, civil liberties, and racial justice is preferred.
- Excellent legal research and writing abilities.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate legal concepts and arguments clearly and persuasively.
- Ability to conduct complex legal analysis and fact investigation.
- Demonstrated project management and organizational skills.
- Ability to foster and contribute to a collaborative team environment.
