Senior Product Counsel, HR & Employment

Job Description

Gusto is seeking a Senior Product Counsel to join its growing Product Legal team. This role involves empowering a team of legal and compliance professionals, advising the business on HR-related product experiences, and serving as a subject matter expert on complex HR legal questions.Responsibilities:

• Counsel the product, engineering, and design teams on employment compliance, wage & hour, employee benefits, marketing, data privacy, and AI use.
• Advise on complex regulatory frameworks to design or enhance innovative B2B and B2C products.
• Contribute to the product suite from brainstorm and ideation through launch.
• Contribute to key initiatives helping to mature the Legal & Compliance team’s functions.
• Empower legal and compliance individuals focused on strategic HR product initiatives.

Requirements:

• JD degree and active license to practice law.
• 10+ years of legal experience, including in-house work at a tech company, with a focus on employment law.
• Experience providing pragmatic legal guidance on tech products.
• Strong problem-solving skills balancing legal risk with business needs.
• Collaborative and able to thrive under pressure in cross-functional teams.
• Demonstrated ability to build consensus and foster strong relationships.
• Eagerness to dive in and drive projects independently.
• Interest in how technology can improve HR processes and reduce pain points.
• Attention to detail and follow-through in a fast-paced environment.
