Job Description

Appian is seeking a Senior Software Engineer II to lead the development of its AI-powered low-code platform. The successful candidate will guide a team of talented engineers, driving the design and implementation of complex, scalable solutions. This role involves leveraging expertise in Python, Java or C#, JavaScript, and AWS services, with a focus on integrating AI technologies such as AWS Bedrock and Anthropic Claude.

The Senior Software Engineer II will architect and deliver microservices and independently deployable components that power intelligent, resilient systems. Their leadership will be pivotal in shaping the future of enterprise software.

Responsibilities include:

• Leading the design, development, and deployment of enterprise-grade, full-stack applications with a strong emphasis on AI integration.
• Mentoring and guiding a team of software engineers.
• Architecting and implementing complex, scalable software solutions.
• Driving the adoption of best practices in software development.
• Collaborating with product managers and other stakeholders.
• Leading technical discussions and providing guidance on architectural decisions.
• Proactively identifying and resolving technical challenges.
• Ensuring the availability, latency, scalability, efficiency, and security of the platform.
• Troubleshooting, investigating, and diagnosing incidents.
• Contributing to software performance analysis and system tuning.
• Building automation to prevent problem recurrence.
• Creating and maintaining comprehensive technical documentation.
• Effectively communicating complex technical designs.
• Taking ownership of team performance, quality, stability, and velocity.
• Championing Agile methodologies and a quality-first culture.

Qualifications:

• BS in Computer Science or related field/degree; MS in Computer Science preferred.
• 8+ years of experience building and delivering enterprise-grade software applications.
• Proven experience leading software development teams.
• Experience in a high-volume or critical production service environment.
• Expert proficiency in Python programming.
• Expertise in Java or C#, Spring, JPA, JDBC, Hibernate, Gradle, and Git.
• Deep understanding of web technologies and AWS cloud services.
• Demonstrated experience with AI technologies and prompt engineering.
• Ability to apply both object-oriented and functional programming approaches.
• Strong advocate for industry best practices, including platform development, DevOps, and CI/CD.
