Job Description
The ACLU is seeking a Special Counsel for Technology and Data Privacy to join their Corporate Counsel’s Office. This role is based in New York, NY, and operates on a hybrid schedule, requiring in-office presence two days a week. The Special Counsel will manage the team’s practice related to technology and data privacy matters, supervise team members, and coordinate with the Privacy and Data Governance team.
Responsibilities include:
- Managing legal aspects of data governance, privacy, cybersecurity, and technology.
- Overseeing contracting for technology tools and services.
- Ensuring compliance with data privacy, security, and consumer protection laws.
- Coordinating data breach preparedness and response.
- Supervising Senior and Associate Corporate Counsels.
- Collaborating with the Chief Privacy Officer and other stakeholders.
- Providing legal advice and reviewing complex contracts.
- Overseeing training on vendor management and data privacy and security laws.
The ideal candidate should have:
- J.D. from an accredited law school and admission to the New York State bar.
- 10+ years of experience in corporate law, with expertise in data privacy and security laws.
- Familiarity with consumer protection laws.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, legal research, and time management skills.
- Ability to handle confidential matters and make independent decisions.
- Experience directing and mentoring junior attorneys.
