Engineering Manager (Citymapper)

Job Description

Citymapper, powered by Via, is seeking an Engineering Manager to lead a high-impact Backend team in London. This team is responsible for the core data infrastructure and backend systems that power the Citymapper platform. The Engineering Manager will play a crucial role in ensuring the accuracy of real-time transport data, supporting key user-facing features, and developing reliable systems used across the platform.

The role involves growing the engineering presence in London and guiding the technical direction of a core function within the company. The Engineering Manager will work closely with engineers, architects, data scientists, and product managers to align on goals and deliverables.

What this role involves:

• Leading, mentoring, and growing a team of backend and data engineers.
• Owning the full technical scope of the team’s products.
• Contributing hands-on to the design, maintenance, and development of scalable backend systems.
• Building new features in backend systems for routing and transport data.
• Strengthening analytics capabilities by managing the flow of user data into the data lake.
• Defining and upholding technical standards for architecture, code quality, testing, and performance.
• Ensuring data accuracy and reliability by monitoring data quality.
• Leading key projects, including launching new product initiatives and migrating systems and data.

Requirements:

• 4+ years of experience managing a team.
• 8+ years of experience in software engineering or data science.
• Experience working with large Python codebases.
• Experience working with cloud computing platforms.
• BSc in Computer Science, Mathematics, or related degree.
• Independent and responsible.
• Passionate about software engineering.
• Driven by tough challenges.
• Enthusiastic about code quality, architecture, design, testing, and performance.
• Great leadership and interpersonal communication skills.
