Job Description
Planet, a company focused on using space to help life on Earth, is seeking a Senior Optical Engineer to join their Electro-Optical Systems team. This role is based in their San Francisco HQ and involves supporting the design, manufacturing, integration, testing, and operation of advanced imaging payloads. The Senior Optical Engineer will collaborate across teams to develop, troubleshoot, and refine optical instruments, including telescopes and cameras, for Earth observation missions. This position requires full-time on-site presence, 5 days a week.
Role involves:
- Coordinating and executing optical manufacturing activities.
- Understanding and executing warm and cold alignment and performance testing.
- Writing test plans and performing data analysis for imaging systems.
- Developing test software and electrical ground support equipment (GSE).
- Coordinating and performing optomechanical manufacturing activities.
- Leading the design, manufacturing, testing, and operation of advanced imaging payloads.
- Providing technical oversight of external vendors.
Requirements:
- 6-8 years of relevant experience with airborne or space-based imaging payloads.
- 3+ years of experience in assembly, integration, alignment, and test of optical instruments.
- Experience with Zemax, MATLAB, Python, and/or C/C++.
- Hands-on attitude and great interpersonal skills.
- Experience working with external vendors and suppliers.
- Experience in recording detailed test descriptions and data summaries.
- Experience in defining and executing Ground Support Equipment (GSE).
- Experience in manufacturing and production environments.
- Educational background in Optical Engineering or equivalent.
