Job Description
The ACLU is seeking a Staff Attorney, Senior Staff Attorney, or Senior Counsel to join their LGBTQ & HIV Project. This role is based in New York, NY, and requires in-office presence two days a week.
The ACLU has been a leading advocate for LGBTQ rights for decades. The Staff Attorney will contribute to the ACLU’s strategic goals through litigation, legislative and policy advocacy, and public education.
What this role involves:
- Litigating in federal and state courts.
- Working with ACLU staff on bills in state legislatures and in Congress.
- Conducting policy advocacy to effect change in state and federal administrative agencies.
- Engaging in community outreach and public speaking.
- Working closely with legal and non-legal program staff.
- Developing relationships with other public interest lawyers and ACLU volunteer lawyers.
- Supervising law clerks.
Requirements:
- J.D. degree and admission to practice in one state.
- Admission to the New York Bar within one year of hire (if not already admitted).
- Significant litigation experience.
- Capacity to perform complex legal analytical work.
- Excellent research skills.
- Ability to convey information effectively and persuasively.
- Proactive, thorough, and adept at collaborating with a wide range of people.
