Staff Backend Engineer in Data

Job Description

Farther is seeking a Staff Backend Engineer to be a technical leader, architecting and driving the development of their core platform and infrastructure. The role involves shaping the technical vision of backend systems, establishing engineering standards, and tackling complex distributed systems challenges. The engineer will work on a fully serverless stack built on AWS Cloud Development Kit (CDK) with Python and Scala, influencing technical decisions that impact the entire financial platform.

Role Involves:

• Driving technical architecture decisions for the serverless backend platform.
• Leading the design and implementation of large-scale distributed systems using AWS serverless technologies.
• Establishing backend engineering standards and best practices for serverless architectures.
• Tackling complex technical challenges in serverless system design, scalability, and reliability.
• Guiding and mentoring senior engineers through complex technical decisions.
• Collaborating with engineering leadership to define technical strategy and roadmap.
• Designing and implementing critical financial systems architecture using AWS serverless services.
• Leading technical discovery and implementation of major new platform capabilities on AWS.

Requirements:

• 10+ years of backend development experience with expertise in distributed systems and serverless architectures.
• Expert knowledge of Python or Scala and modern serverless frameworks.
• Extensive experience with AWS serverless technologies (lambdas, SQS/SNS, S3, EventBridge, CloudWatch) and distributed data systems.
• Strong background in financial systems architecture and serverless implementation.
• Track record of making significant technical decisions that positively impact engineering organizations.
• Experience mentoring senior engineers and driving technical best practices in cloud-native environments.
• Outstanding written and verbal communication skills, particularly in technical documentation.
• Proven ability to break down complex technical problems and guide solutions across multiple teams.
• Deep understanding of AWS cloud infrastructure and serverless microservices architecture.
• History of successful technical leadership without direct management responsibilities.
