Job Description
The ACLU is offering a fellowship sponsorship opportunity within its Immigrants’ Rights Project (IRP) for rising third-year law students and law graduates. This role, based in either New York or San Francisco, involves working on civil rights and civil liberties issues related to immigration. The fellow will contribute to litigation, advocacy, and public education efforts.
The Immigrants’ Rights Project litigates cases in trial and appellate courts, including the U.S. Supreme Court, to protect the civil rights and civil liberties of immigrants and seek equal justice under the law.
This is a hybrid role that requires in-office presence for two days per week or eight days per month.
What this role involves:
- Litigating immigrants’ rights cases.
- Conducting legal research and analysis.
- Developing public education materials.
- Articulating ACLU views to various audiences.
- Working with legislative and policy advocates.
- Advising ACLU state affiliates and partner organizations.
- Managing summer legal internship program and supervising student interns.
Requirements:
- J.D. or expected J.D. by Spring 2026.
- Admission to practice in New York or California (or agreement to become admitted within one year of hire).
- Commitment to public interest law, civil liberties, immigrants’ rights, and racial and social justice.
- Excellent research, writing, and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to conduct complex legal analysis and fact-finding.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work independently and within a team.
