Job Description
The ACLU is offering a sponsorship opportunity for a Legal Fellow to join the National Prison Project (NPP) in Washington, D.C. This fellowship, lasting up to two years, is designed for rising third-year law students and recent law graduates. NPP, founded in 1972, focuses on litigating carceral conditions cases nationwide, advocating for the rights and humane treatment of incarcerated individuals. This is a hybrid role requiring two days per week or eight days per month in the office.

Role Involves:
  • Working on existing cases and developing a fellowship project.
  • Conducting legal research and analysis.
  • Drafting legal documents and memoranda.
  • Interviewing witnesses and potential clients.
  • Monitoring prison and jail systems' compliance.
  • Participating in discovery and trial practice.
  • Drafting public education materials.
  • Supporting ACLU affiliates and supervising student interns.

Requirements:
  • J.D. or expected J.D. by spring 2026.
  • Commitment to public interest law, civil liberties, criminal justice, and racial justice.
  • Willingness to work closely with NPP on funding applications.
  • Excellent research, writing, and communication skills.
  • Ability to conduct complex legal analysis.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work independently and in a team.
  • Self-motivation and ability to manage multiple tasks.
