Job Description
The ACLU is offering a sponsorship opportunity for a Legal Fellow to join the National Prison Project (NPP) in Washington, D.C. This fellowship, lasting up to two years, is designed for rising third-year law students and recent law graduates. NPP, founded in 1972, focuses on litigating carceral conditions cases nationwide, advocating for the rights and humane treatment of incarcerated individuals. This is a hybrid role requiring two days per week or eight days per month in the office.
Role Involves:
- Working on existing cases and developing a fellowship project.
- Conducting legal research and analysis.
- Drafting legal documents and memoranda.
- Interviewing witnesses and potential clients.
- Monitoring prison and jail systems' compliance.
- Participating in discovery and trial practice.
- Drafting public education materials.
- Supporting ACLU affiliates and supervising student interns.
Requirements:
- J.D. or expected J.D. by spring 2026.
- Commitment to public interest law, civil liberties, criminal justice, and racial justice.
- Willingness to work closely with NPP on funding applications.
- Excellent research, writing, and communication skills.
- Ability to conduct complex legal analysis.
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work independently and in a team.
- Self-motivation and ability to manage multiple tasks.
