Job Description
Degreed is seeking a Senior Backend Engineer to join their Learning Experience Platform (LXP) team. The candidate will design, implement, and optimize scalable backend services, prioritizing quality, decoupling, performance, and maintainability. He/she will be part of a high-impact, cross-functional team of engineers who thrive on collaboration and are passionate about building user-centric cloud applications. Role involves:
- Owning end-to-end implementation of new backend services and enhancements to existing services
- Continuously improving system architecture by applying modern engineering practices and re-architecting legacy components
- Designing and running A/B tests to measure feature impact and make data-informed improvements
- Investigating and troubleshooting production issues to ensure platform stability and performance
- Collaborating with cross-functional teams to deliver high-quality backend solutions aligned with product goals
- Mentoring team members, promoting knowledge sharing, and contributing to a culture of learning
- Working in an Agile environment, fostering a team culture of trust, collaboration, and continuous growth
Requirements:
- 7+ years of overall experience in backend engineering, including 3+ years designing and optimizing scalable APIs and microservices
- Proven experience developing and scaling backend services for complex, high-scale cloud-native applications
- Strong hands-on skills in backend programming languages such as C# or Java, with expertise in building robust REST APIs
- Experience with SQL and database technologies like PostgreSQL, MySQL, or MongoDB, including schema design and query optimization
- Familiarity with containerization, event-driven architectures, and caching strategies
- Understanding of distributed systems and architectural patterns for building scalable solutions
- Experience with UI frameworks like Angular is a plus
- Knowledge of semantic search or Elasticsearch is a strong advantage
- Proven ability to work in fast-paced, startup-like environments with evolving priorities
- Strong ownership mindset with a bias for action and delivering impactful results
- Contributions to open-source projects or impactful side projects that showcase technical innovation
