Director of Engineering (L7)

Job Description

Teachable is seeking a Director of Engineering to lead the Core Engineering Team, focusing on the learning experience at the heart of the platform. This role involves guiding cross-functional teams to build impactful features for customers and students, collaborating with Product and Design, and shaping technical strategy. The Director will play a key role in evolving the architecture from a monolith to a service-oriented system. They will report to the VP of Product & Engineering and manage engineering managers and individual contributors. This is a hybrid role based in New York City, with in-office presence expected 1-2 days per week.

• Lead, mentor, and grow an organization of ~30 engineers.
• Collaborate with Product and Design to define and deliver a roadmap.
• Own technical direction and architectural decisions for the Core experience.
• Establish engineering best practices.
• Contribute to org-wide engineering strategy and planning.

• 10+ years of engineering experience in product-focused tech companies.
• 5+ years managing engineering teams (including other managers).
• Experience delivering customer-facing products in an agile environment.
• Strong communication and collaboration skills.
• Deep technical expertise in web application development.
• Familiarity with frameworks like Ruby on Rails, Next.js, and Go.
• Experience evolving complex systems toward modern architectures.
