Job Description
The New York Times is seeking a Senior Engineering Manager to join their Storytelling group. This role is pivotal in managing the technical aspects of the Story experience, from the editing interface to the reader experience. The Senior Engineering Manager will lead engineering teams through full-stack innovation projects, run experiments, and scale features to engage readers. This hybrid role is based in New York City, requiring two days per week in the office.
Responsibilities:
- Lead the technical capability of our Story experience
- Partner with engineers and Product, Design, and Data counterparts
- Coach engineers in developing architectures
- Work with our Newsroom Support team to ensure reliable 24x7 global operations
- Partner with engineers to set technical strategies
- Supervise engineers, ensuring that contributors are effective
- Coach the team on product engineering
- Own technical and culture initiatives at the group level
- Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence
Requirements:
- 3+ years of experience as an Engineering Manager
- Experience setting and executing technical strategies
- Experience managing production operations for high-availability systems
- Prior experience collaborating with cross-functional leaders across Product, Design, and Data
- Demonstrated history of developing a high-performance team and growing its skills over time
- Fluency in JavaScript applications, cloud deployments, observability, monitoring, and alerting
- Direct experience with digital journalism, CMS systems, and/or ProseMirror (Preferred)
