Staff Backend Engineer, Developer Experience

Job Description

GitLab, an open core software company known for its AI-powered DevSecOps platform, is seeking a Staff Backend Engineer to join its Developer Experience organization. In this role, the engineer will contribute to enhancing engineering excellence at GitLab by developing tools that measure, analyze, and optimize development workflows, ultimately boosting developer productivity.

The Staff Backend Engineer will collaborate across teams, providing technical leadership and guidance aligned with strategic objectives. They will plan and execute improvements with a 12-month roadmap, solve complex technical problems, and partner with the management team to engage on stage-level aspects of larger initiatives. The engineer will also propose technical implementations that support architectural changes to solve scaling and performance problems.

This role involves:

• Contributing to the direction of the Developer Experience stage.
• Teaching, mentoring, and growing engineers across teams.
• Planning and executing improvements with a 12-month roadmap.
• Solving complex, ambiguous technical problems.
• Partnering with the Management team.
• Proposing technical implementations for architectural changes.
• Interacting with customers and external stakeholders.
• Shipping features and improvements independently.

GitLab requires:

• Strong proficiency in Ruby or Golang (Ruby preferred).
• Experience with public cloud infrastructure (GCP, AWS, or Azure).
• Understanding of Infrastructure as Code & configuration management (Terraform & Ansible).
• Track record building developer tools.
• Experience with testing approaches and product launches.
• Experience with software design and architecture.
• Technical leadership experience.
• Background in engineering productivity, developer tooling, and test automation.
• Experience managing data and building visualization with analytics platforms.
