Anthropic is seeking a Research Manager to lead the Pretraining Data team (Tokens) in San Francisco. This role involves leading a team of researchers and research engineers focused on understanding and innovating the data that powers Anthropic's foundational AI models. The Research Manager will be responsible for optimizing pretraining data, investigating new data sources, and researching methodologies for effective data utilization.Role involves:

• Leading research and engineering efforts on pretraining data optimization.
• Prioritizing the team's research agenda.
• Contributing to the technical stack.
• Managing day-to-day execution and coaching team members.
• Maintaining a deep understanding of the team's work and its implications for AI safety.

Requirements:

• 3-5 years of management experience in a research/technical environment.
• Strong background in machine learning/AI with a focus on research.
• Comfort with an empirical and fast-paced research environment.
• Ability to understand and contribute to discussions on complex technical topics.
• Experience leading high-performing teams of researchers.
• Care about the societal impacts of your work.
• Bachelor's degree in a related field or equivalent experience.
