Principal Database Engineer

Job Description

Elite Technology is seeking a Principal Database Engineer to play a key role in scaling and optimizing its database infrastructure to support business-critical SaaS applications. This is a strategic role responsible for driving architectural direction, performance, and reliability of Azure SQL-based systems. The ideal candidate will thrive at the intersection of deep technical work, cross-functional influence, and long-term platform vision.

Role involves:

• Designing and implementing secure, scalable, and performant database architectures using cloud-native technologies within Azure.
• Driving long-term strategies around database scaling, tenant isolation, CDC pipelines, and replication models.
• Analyzing and resolving complex performance issues, optimizing query execution, and defining best practices for indexing, partitioning, and resource tuning.
• Serving as a technical mentor to engineers across software, platform, and DevOps teams.
• Promoting automation-first approaches for schema changes, release management, monitoring, backups, and compliance.
• Leading risk assessments, incident response readiness, and enforcing database security and documentation standards.
• Influencing cross-functional architecture decisions by articulating trade-offs and aligning with business priorities.
• Managing database infrastructure for multi-tenant, high-scale SaaS environments.
• Communicating technical direction and system implications effectively across teams and stakeholders.

Requirements:

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
• 10+ years of experience in database engineering or administration.
• Hands-on experience with Azure SQL, including advanced T-SQL, query tuning, and database optimization.
• Experience with Change Data Capture (CDC), Change Tracking, replication, and backup/restore strategies in cloud environments.
• Understanding of cloud infrastructure, networking, and database security best practices in Azure.
• Proficiency with infrastructure-as-code and DevOps tooling (e.g., Azure DevOps, Terraform, GitHub Actions).
• Experience architecting and maintaining cloud-native database platforms for SaaS applications.
• Ability to influence without authority across teams and align database decisions with business outcomes.
• Strong communication and technical writing skills.
