Job Description
The New York Times is seeking a talented and experienced journalist to serve as the Afghanistan/Pakistan bureau chief. This role involves covering the region, including conflicts, economy, security, and politics. The bureau chief will manage news-gathering activities and oversee the bureau's logistics.
Responsibilities:
- Cover live and breaking news, enterprise, and investigations in the region.
- Generate coverage ideas, including specific targets and broad themes.
- Write articles on deadline, incorporating feedback and edits.
- Create and assign stories, shaping and editing them as needed.
- Build a network of stringers, reporters, and translators for sourcing and reporting.
- Hire and manage bureau staff, ensuring engagement, motivation, and development.
- Collaborate with other reporters and departments to produce stories in various formats.
- Oversee bureau logistics and operations, including leases, equipment, and budget reports.
- Demonstrate support for journalistic independence and the mission to seek the truth.
Requirements:
- Proven international reporting and writing experience, preferably for a global news organization.
- Ability to handle breaking news, analysis, and enterprise reporting.
- Leadership and management skills.
- Detailed understanding of the region's history and politics.
- Fluency in other languages is preferable.
- Proactive problem-solving skills.
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, deadline-oriented environment.
