Job Description
Tailscale is seeking a Software Engineer to join their team. The Software Engineer will contribute to the development of the Tailscale product, specifically working on the coordination server and open source client code. The ideal candidate will exhibit a strong understanding of distributed systems and networks, with experience in SQL databases and Go.
The Software Engineer will have ownership of the entire product lifecycle, from writing code to product ideation and strategic decision-making. They will be involved in shaping features that enhance networking capabilities, working closely with UX/UI designers and product managers.

What this role involves:
- Designing, building, testing, and documenting core software components
- Developing and optimizing product features across the coordination server backend and open source client code
- Exhibiting ownership over running services by building for observability, participating in incident response, and fielding customer support escalations
- Analyzing and improving the efficiency, scalability, and stability of systems and resources
- Bringing a security-first mindset to both design and implementation
Requirements:
- Experience with distributed systems
- Experience with one or more SQL databases
- Familiarity with networks (IP addressing, routing, etc.)
- Ability to give and process constructive feedback, as well as work independently
- Flexibility to adjust to the dynamic nature of a startup
- Ability to join an on call rotation, after becoming familiar with the platform
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
