Job Description
The Financial Times is seeking a Managing Editor for Ignites, its publication covering the U.S. mutual fund, ETF, and defined contribution retirement plan marketplace. The Managing Editor will maintain high editorial standards and lead a team of reporters.
The role involves taking ownership of the publication and leading it forward, taking charge of a daily newsletter and website that provides in-depth coverage of relevant issues, shaping the publication's tone and direction, and positioning it for future success.
Responsibilities:
- Driving the overall direction of the publication, including beat structure, hiring, and coaching of reporters.
- Managing and coaching a team of reporters to produce essential content for investment management professionals.
- Conducting regular performance reviews.
- Collaborating with other departments to integrate video, graphics, and webcasts into editorial coverage.
- Sourcing and managing freelancers.
- Recruiting and training reporters.
- Editing all content and publishing daily issues of Ignites.
- Editing breaking news alerts.
- Leading story meetings and guiding story selection.
- Ensuring adherence to Financial Times style and quality standards.
- Developing knowledge of covered topics and reader needs.
- Meeting with readers to ensure Ignites meets their information needs.
- Monitoring online statistics to gauge editorial quality.
- Considering competitive threats and enhancements for Ignites.
- Researching and implementing ideas to improve the publication.
- Moderating webcasts or panels at events.
- Sharing knowledge with the events group.
- Representing Ignites' editorial team internally and externally.
Requirements:
- Experience managing a staff of reporters.
- Demonstrated ability to produce content for a specific niche audience.
- Experience working a beat and generating scoops.
- Track record of continuous improvement and initiative.
- Ability to recognize and respond to readers’ needs.
- Knowledge of investment management or financial services.
