Site Reliability Engineer 2 - Database

Job Description

PhonePe Group is looking for an experienced Site Reliability Engineer (SRE) - Database to ensure the performance, availability, and security of MySQL clusters. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of Linux systems and experience managing large database farms.

The SRE Database Engineer will be responsible for orchestrating upgrades, backups, performance monitoring, and provisioning of database instances for a high-demand, fast-growing environment with tens of Terabytes of data. PhonePe expects this role to build tools, services, and automation to manage and improve production services.

Responsibilities:

• Provision and manage farms of multimaster MySQL/galera clusters across geographical locations
• Ensure performance, security, and availability of databases
• Handle common database procedures, such as upgrade, backup, recovery, migration
• Manage database changes (alters & other DDLs)
• Manage infrastructure components outside DB systems and ensuring overall reliability of service
• Troubleshoot issues across the stack - hardware, software, application, and network
• Collaborate with other team members and stakeholders
• Participate in on-call rotation

Skills and Qualifications:

• Experience in Linux is a must
• Strong proficiency in MySQL database management
• Experience with large farms of DB clusters (10+) and large-sized DBs (1TB+)
• Understanding of MySQL’s underlying storage engines (InnoDB) and experience with replication configuration
• Knowledge of de-facto standards and best practices in MySQL
• Ability to plan resource requirements from high-level specifications
• Ability to effectively manage/augment capacity
• Familiarity with other SQL/NoSQL databases is a plus
• Knowledge of limitations in MySQL and their workarounds in contrast to other popular relational databases is a plus
• Proficient understanding of code versioning tools like Git
• Ability to mentor younger engineers
