Principal Software Engineer (Data and Reporting)

Smartly is seeking a Principal Software Engineer to help solve data challenges. The engineer will play a key role in developing high-performance, scalable solutions that power data-driven advertising. They will drive architectural decisions, optimize large-scale data processing, and enhance reporting tools.

The role involves improving and maintaining Smartly’s core reporting engine by ingesting and aggregating billions of data points across various ad channels. This system is mission-critical, providing advertisers with insights and enabling campaign optimization at scale. The engineer will also improve database performance and scalability.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead and drive architectural improvements to ensure scalability, efficiency, and correctness in our reporting infrastructure.
  • Optimize high-performance data processing with large datasets and SQL queries.
  • Enhance and extend our flexible query language.
  • Contribute to our core reporting service backend, ensuring high availability and top-tier performance.
  • Mentor and elevate other engineers, fostering a culture of technical excellence.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with product, design, and engineering leadership.

Requirements:

  • Deep expertise in relational databases (PostgreSQL is a plus).
  • Experience with distributed tables and scaling strategies.
  • Experience with schema design, query tuning, and execution plan analysis.
  • Understanding of OLAP and OLTP workloads.
  • Experience with time series data.
  • Experience optimizing large-scale data processing and high-throughput workloads.
  • Ability to effectively collaborate across multiple teams and stakeholders.
  • Ownership mindset.
  • Ability and willingness to work in a hybrid capacity from our Helsinki office 3 days a week.
