Head of Machine Learning and AI

Job Description

Gusto is seeking a Head of Machine Learning and AI to lead a newly formed function within the company. This role involves working with senior stakeholders to enhance customer experiences and improve operations by aligning ML/AI use cases with organizational goals. The Head of ML/AI will report to the Head of Data and collaborate with cross-functional platform teams to ensure scalable and robust ML/AI initiatives. The Risk Data Science and Analytics team will also report to this role.

Responsibilities:

• Lead, manage, and mentor the Applied ML/AI and Risk Data Science teams.
• Define and execute the strategy for Applied ML/AI across the organization.
• Collaborate with ML Engineering Platform and AI Platform teams for seamless integration.
• Oversee the design, development, and deployment of machine learning models and AI solutions.
• Partner with stakeholders to identify opportunities for ML/AI-driven improvements.
• Drive the adoption of best practices in model development and ensure compliance.
• Advocate for responsible AI usage and establish frameworks for fairness and transparency.
• Establish KPIs to track the performance and business impact of ML solutions.
• Manage team resources, budgets, and timelines.
• Stay abreast of the latest developments in machine learning and AI.

Requirements:

• 8+ years of experience leading teams in applied machine learning, AI, or data science.
• Strong expertise in machine learning techniques, statistical modeling, and AI technologies.
• Strong software engineering literacy.
• Excellent leadership and people management skills.
• Strong collaboration and communication skills.
• Capable of translating complex ML/AI concepts into actionable business strategies.
• Strategic thinker with a business-first mindset.
• Deep understanding of MLOps practices.
• Excellent communication skills.
• Passion for responsible AI practices.
