Job Description

Scalapay is seeking a Principal Engineer to join its Merchant Solutions division. The role involves serving as the technical counterpart to the Product Lead, overseeing technical implementation, architecture, and support of merchant-facing payment solutions. It is focused on maintaining and improving integrations with key distribution partners. This role requires balancing hands-on development, solution design, architecture work, and customer-facing activities.

The Principal Engineer will drive technical excellence and innovation, ensuring robust and scalable merchant solutions that deliver exceptional integration experiences. They will provide technical leadership across merchant-facing payment products, architect APIs and SDKs, and oversee technical aspects of developer documentation and partner portals.

The ideal candidate will thrive in bridging technical expertise with business impact, leading technical pre-sales engineering efforts and collaborating with product teams.

Responsibilities include:

  • Leading the maintenance and improvement of critical integrations with key distribution partners such as Stripe and Adyen
  • Architecting and developing merchant-facing APIs, SDKs, and integration points
  • Overseeing technical aspects of developer documentation, Admin Tool, and Partner Portal
  • Designing and implementing partner integrations, plugin architecture, and payment gateway connections
  • Leading technical pre-sales engineering efforts to support merchant adoption
  • Driving technical implementation and architecture for new merchant products and features

The candidate should have:

  • 8+ years of software engineering experience with demonstrated technical depth
  • Strong expertise in JavaScript/TypeScript and modern web development
  • Experience designing, building, and maintaining production-grade APIs and integration systems
  • Deep knowledge of payment processing technical architecture and e-commerce platforms
  • Experience leading technical integration projects with external partners and merchants
  • Strong architectural thinking with focus on scalability, performance, and security
  • Technical communication skills that bridge engineering, product, and merchant audiences
  • Experience creating developer-focused documentation and integration resources
  • Excellent communication skills
